Built Differently

Eau Claire, Wisconsin sits at the confluence of the Eau Claire and Chippewa Rivers — a geographic feature so central to its identity that the city's name literally means "clear water" in French, a nod to the region's early French-Canadian fur traders.

  • Lumber capital claim: In the 1870s and 1880s, Eau Claire was one of the largest lumber-producing cities in the entire United States, with dozens of sawmills lining the Chippewa River — at its peak, the region milled more white pine than almost anywhere else in the world.
  • Birthplace of a typewriter giant: Christopher Latham Sholes, who is credited as the primary inventor of the first practical typewriter and the QWERTY keyboard layout, lived and worked in the broader Wisconsin region with strong ties to its early newspaper industry, and Eau Claire's own press culture grew directly from that legacy.
  • Underground claim to fame: Eau Claire is home to one of the largest known cave systems in Wisconsin, with Harstad County Park sitting atop a network of limestone formations that draw geologists and spelunking enthusiasts from across the Midwest.
  • Indie music magnetism: The city punches far above its weight in the indie music world — Grammy-winning artist Bon Iver not only hails from Eau Claire but recorded his breakthrough album there in a cabin during a Wisconsin winter, and the city now hosts the annual Eaux Claires music festival he co-founded.
  • Unexpected retail history: Eau Claire was the site of one of the earliest Walmart stores established in Wisconsin, and the regional retail competition it sparked in the 1980s fundamentally reshaped shopping patterns across the entire Chippewa Valley.

Trivia Question❓

Eau Claire, Wisconsin sits at the confluence of the Chippewa River and which other river that gives the city its French name, meaning "clear water"?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has earned the Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability, joining 13 other institutions in a pilot group recognized for their approach to sustainability.

The designation looks beyond recycling and energy use to consider teaching, research, campus operations, career preparation and community engagement.

UW-Eau Claire credits students, faculty, staff and local partners with building the collaborative foundation behind the recognition.

Chancellor Edwin Martini called the honor a reflection of that shared work, but the designation is not a finish line.

It will remain in place for six years, giving the university time to strengthen student opportunities and partnerships across the Eau Claire area.

For local residents, the test will be how that commitment shows up in campus research and community relationships.

Joke Of The Day

I told someone I was moving to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and they said, "Is the water really that clear?"

I said, "I don't know, but the cheese curds are transparent — I can see straight through my diet."

Demolition of the David Drummond House is changing a familiar stretch of State Street in Eau Claire’s Third Ward.

Crews began tearing down the Queen Anne home at 1310 State St. on Sept. 23, a year after a fire badly damaged it.

Water damage from firefighting added to the cost of repairs, and restoring the building to meet current local codes was deemed financially unfeasible.

Built in 1888 for local businessman David Drummond, the house remained in his family through 1932 and later became a multi-unit apartment building.

During demolition, the owner offered community members limited opportunities to collect ordinary bricks by appointment.

Decorative masonry is being saved for possible use in a future development, though plans for the property remain uncertain.

For the Third Ward, the loss leaves more than an empty lot: it removes a home that connected the neighborhood’s history with its everyday life.

A garage fire at a west-side Eau Claire townhouse displaced 10 residents early Sunday, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters arrived at the 2800 block of Prestige Court shortly after 1:27 in the morning and found smoke coming from a four-unit building with attached garages.

Crews located the fire in one garage and kept the flames from spreading, while a search confirmed everyone had escaped.

The living areas sustained minor smoke damage, and the Red Cross is helping displaced residents find temporary housing.

The cause remains under investigation, and Eau Claire Fire Rescue has not released a damage estimate.
